Jul 11, 2014  How to get back into OS X from Windows when using Boot Camp By Konrad Krawczyk July 11, 2014 Boot Camp isn’t exactly a feature that’s new to Mac OS X: If you want to.

Boot Camp Control Panel User Guide

You can set the default operating system to either macOS or Windows. The default operating system is the one you want to use when you turn on or restart your Mac.

  • Nov 08, 2017  I've just gotten CentOS installed on my 12-core MacPro5,1, just in time for Apple officially declaring the MacPro5,1 'obsolete' (despite being one the fastest, most extendable, most versatile mac still on the market. I wanted it native to make the most of the resources (esp. 12 cores, 64GB ram, and CUDA GPGPU) versus running on a VM.
  • Next, you’ll see the partition pie chart. You will see you can move the slider around the pie to resize your partition (s). Pull the size slider back for the Mac OS partition to release the free space on the disk. Make a blank partition until you have enough space for your new Linux system.
  • Jul 12, 2009  Previously, I used Boot Camp to dual boot into Windows XP. I'm pretty sure Centos installed a GRUB boot loader, but when I hold option down on startup the only option is my Mac drive (I deleted the Windows partition to install the Linux side). Before I installed Centos, I removed the Windows partition with XP on it and zeroed out all my free space.

Set the default operating system

  1. In Windows on your Mac, click in the right side of the taskbar, click the Boot Camp icon , then choose Boot Camp Control Panel.

  2. If a User Account Control dialog appears, click Yes.

  3. Select the startup disk that has the default operating system you want to use.

  4. If you want to start up using the default operating system now, click Restart. Otherwise, click OK.

You can’t change your startup volume to an external FireWire or USB drive while you’re using Windows.

To learn how to change the default operating system using macOS, see Get started with Boot Camp.

Restart in macOS

In Windows on your Mac, do one of the following:

  • Restart using Startup Manager: Restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Option key. When the Startup Manager window appears, release the Option key, select your macOS startup disk, then press Return.

If you’re using a portable Mac with an external keyboard, make sure you press and hold the Option key on the built-in keyboard.

  • Restart using Boot Camp Control Panel: Click in the right side of the taskbar, click the Boot Camp icon , then choose Restart in macOS.

This also sets the default operating system to macOS.

For more information about restarting in macOS, see the Apple Support article Switch between Windows and macOS.

Hi Jkutos,

I understand you are not able to boot to your Mac since installing Windows 7 with Bootcamp. If you are seeing a prohibitory symbol, your Mac can't find a valid System Folder to start from. You will need to reinstall the OS X to resolve the issue. Do you not have a Time Machine backup of your computer?

Prohibitory symbol

When you see a circle with a slash symbol instead of the Apple logo, it means your Mac couldn't find a valid System Folder to start up from.

If you're using your Mac at a school or business, it might be trying to start from the wrong version of OS X. Contact your IT department for more help.

If this is your personal Mac, try reinstalling OS X by using OS X Recovery.

OS X Recovery includes a built in set of utilities as part of the Recovery System. You can use OS X Recovery to do the following:

  • Restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup.
  • Verify and repair connected drives using Disk Utility.
  • Check your Internet connection or get help online using Safari.
  • Install or reinstall OS X.

To start your computer from Recovery, restart your Mac and hold down the Command and R keys at startup.

Hold these keys until the Apple logo appears. After your computer finishes starting up, you should see a desktop with an OS X menu bar and an OS X Utilities window with the options listed above. If you see a login window or your own desktop instead of the Utilities window, it's possible that you didn't press Command-R early enough. Restart your computer and try again.

Choose the option you want to use from the Utilities window or the Utilities menu.

In order to reinstall OS X, you need to be connected to the Internet using Ethernet or Wi-Fi. If you're using a wireless Internet connection, click the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-right corner of the screen to select a nearby Wi-Fi network. Choose your preferred network name and enter a username and password to join the network if needed.

Take care,
